12 volumes in-4 (18 X 27 cm), demi chagrin rouge, dos à nerfs et à caissons orné (fente à un mors du tome 3, coins émoussés), rousseurs éparses parfois très prononcées.

Edition illustrée de 156 planches hors texte (sur 157) gravées sur acier, coloriées à la main, daprès les dessins de Victor Adam (il manque une planche dans le tome 2 : la saricovienne et la fouine), un portrait de Buffon (1707-1788) gravé par Emile Giroux, un frontispice dessiné par Adam gravé par Migneret montrant "le génie de la nature", 4 cartes.

Cette édition est considérée comme lune des plus complètes et des meilleures publiées au XIX° siècle.

- Tome 4 : Les singes, additions aux quadrupèdes. 2 ff. + 680 pp.

- Tome 5 : Oiseaux. 2 ff. + 597 pp.

- Tome 6 : Oiseaux. 2 ff. + 586 pp.

- Tome 7 : Oiseaux. 2 ff. + 624 pp., 2 planches détachées.

- Tome 8 : Oiseaux. 2 ff. + 631 pp.

- Tome 9 : Introduction aux minéraux. 2 ff. + 670 pp.

- Tome 10 : Minéraux. 2 ff. + 568 pp. + 1 p.

- Tome 11 : Minéraux. 2 ff. + 609 pp.

- Tome 12 : Expériences sur les végétaux, table des matières. 2 ff. + 824 pp. + 5 pp., macule brune en fond de cahiers en marge supérieure des pages 270 à la table des matières incluses.

Il y eut plusieurs tirages chez Garnier. Le nombre de planches semble varier selon les exemplaires.

Bon exemplaire malgré les défauts annoncés. Vendu en létat du manque dune planche et des rousseurs éparses.
